KAI and Judgement-Perception Dimension of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

The description given for SN and JP dimensions of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) suggest overlap with Adaption-Innovation. People whose preferences lean toward the Judgment side usually like a planned, decided, orderly way of life better than a flexible way. Those who score on the Perception side tend to prefer a flexible, spontaneous way of life to one that is planned and orderly (Myers, 1962; Myers & McCaulley, 1985).

Carne & Kirton (1982) and Gryskiewicz et al (1986), using large samples of managers found expected correlations between found significant correlations between the KAI and both SN and JP.

The present study focuses on the Judgment-Perception. The sample consisted of 620 adult participants (82.5% male) in training programmes at the Center for Creative Leadership. The mean age of the subjects was 41.4 years (SD = 6.8). The majority of the subjects (76.1%) were employed at the middle, upper middle, or executive level of management (76.2% were with industrial organisations), and 72.7% were from organisations with over 1000 employees. Bachelor’s degrees were held by 43.0%, and 43.2% had earned further degrees at the master’s or doctorate level.


The mean score on the KAI for this sample was 98.2 (SD = 15.8), insignificantly different from that reported in other studies of US, UK , Italian and Singaporean managers who are, like this sample, predominantly male. The mean score on the JP scale of the MBTI was –16, which means 16 points in the Judging direction (SD = 24.3). The Pearson product-moment correlation obtained was not large, .32, indeed smaller than for other studies, but, given the size of the sample, highly significant (<.0001) in the expected direction.
